As an unincorporated community, primary New Paris law enforcement services are provided by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division. Founded in 1830, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office responds to approximately 70,000 calls for service each year. The ECSO was the first Sheriff’s Office in the nation to earn accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and currently maintains accreditation CALEA, ACA, and NCCHC. The Sheriff also oversees the County Jail, located just outside of Elkhart, Indiana. Patrol deputies drive two-toned brown and white patrol cars. Additional police coverage is provided by Troopers from the Indiana State Police. Troopers drive two-toned blue and white commissions.
A number of recent Sheriffs have connections to New Paris, including former Sheriffs Tom Snider and Brad Rogers. Sheriff-elect Michael Culp is also from New Paris. Have questions about law enforcement? Ask your local deputy!

About Your Sheriff: Sheriff Jeff A. Siegel has been with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s office since March 18, 1991. Sheriff Siegel has served as a Patrol Officer, Undercover operative assigned to the multi-jurisdictional Elkhart County Drug Task Force, Detective and Captain. In 1997 Siegel was promoted to Detective and in 2004 he was promoted by Sheriff Mike Books to Detective Captain. Siegel served as the Detective Captain until December 2018.
On November 6, 2018, the citizens of Elkhart County elected Siegel to serve as the 45th Sheriff of Elkhart County. On November 8, 2022, Siegel was once again elected as Sheriff of Elkhart County. Indiana Sheriffs are term-limited to serving two consecutive 4-year terms. Sheriff Siegel not only serves the community at the Sheriff’s Office but also serves on many local boards. Siegel actively participates on the following boards: Public Safety Communications Center, Oaklawn, Elkhart County Fair, Community Corrections, The Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council, and is also the current President of the Elkhart County Drug-Free Partnership.
